Information about your Session

I want our time together to be a relaxing and enjoyable experience, so here is some information about how to prepare for and what you can expect during your session.

Sessions can run anywhere from one to three hours, depending on the type of session. Babies and children are going to need breaks–that’s okay!  We all need breaks sometimes.  I always allot extra time for breaks, so don’t worry about running out of time.

Here are specific suggestions for what to bring/wear to your session:

Maternity

  • Plan for a few outfit changes, but try to keep them all in the same “feel”–you probably don’t want part of your photos in a beautiful cream dress and the other part in overalls!
  • The best outfits for maternity photos are those that really show off your bump!
  • Don’t forget any accessories you want to showcase, such as sonogram photos, baby’s first shoes or a special blanket.

Fresh 48

  • A Fresh 48 session is an in-hospital session that takes place within the first two days after the birth of your baby.
  • These sessions are unposed and stress-free, offering a way to forever remember that first day with your brand new baby.
  • We will capture things like first feedings, first diapers changes, and cuddle time with parents and siblings.

Studio Newborns

  • I am fully prepared for newborn sessions.  I have wraps, props, and other accessories, so you do not need to bring any clothing or props for your baby (unless, of course, you have something special in mind!).
  • For parents and siblings, neutrals are best.  White, black, tan, gray, cream and navy all photograph beautifully and will not take attention away from your baby.

  • When your baby arrives, I will send you a more detailed list.

Lifestyle Newborns

  • A lifestyle newborn session takes place in the comfort of your own home, and focuses on the relationship between your family and the new baby.
  • A lifestyle session is great for including siblings and family pets!
  • During a lifestyle session, we typically make use of the nursery, master bedroom and living room.  Don’t worry about deep cleaning your house, though…I am great at hiding little things that interfere with amazing images!

First Birthday/Cake Smash

  • You should bring separate outfits for the portrait and cake smash portions of your session.
  • A full outfit is not necessary for the cake smash portion–a diaper cover or tutu will do just fine if that’s what you prefer.  You may also want to consider a personalized onesie.
  • Don’t forget about accessories!  Headbands, bow ties and balloons all make great additions to your session.
  • I will provide a smash cake matching your theme, but if your child has allergies, please be prepared to bring your own!

Families and Children

  • What to wear for your family session can be a great source of stress, but don’t worry!  We’ll work together to find a color scheme that works for your family.
  • Avoid matching outifts.  Instead try to find outfits that complement each other without matching.
  • Avoid clothing with logos and busy patterns.  One striped sweater or floral dress can be a great starting point for the rest of the family’s outfits, but matching plaid shirts will only distract from your beautiful family!

Birth Sessions

  • I only schedule one birth session during any given five week period, because I am on-call for your birth from three weeks before your due date through two weeks after!
  • We will communicate often as your due date approaches, and when the time comes, I will try to arrive at the hospital when you are around 6cm dilated.
  • Your birth images can include as little or as much detail as you want!
